3D claw glove

For the development of the 3D sketch models I decided to create a claw-like glove that covered three fingers. I decided to make this using wire, coloured wire that I took from an electrical cord and masking tape. I decided to use these materials because I wanted to experiment more with wire and I also wanted to make something functional. I decided to make a claw glove because I originally wanted to make something like a prosthetic finger for people that had lost part of their finger. When starting this project I realised that I didn’t know how to make a single part that was disconnected from the body move on its own. Upon realising this I did some research into how prosthetics are made but realised I didn’t have enough time to fully develop a prosthetic. I decided after realising this that i would still use the idea but make claw gloves instead because I still wanted to use the idea of having something that would be wearable on the hands. To make the parts that connected to the fingers I made it with the coloured wire that was more malleable. To start i created the basic form and ‘skeleton’ of the finger pieces (as shown in the first picture) and later wrapped the pieces in the black wire that was less malleable but stronger to reinforce the frame. I connected the pieces to a circular piece of wire to attach the finger pieces together and to have a piece that encircled the wrist to hold it onto the hand. I then wrapped it in masking tape so the wire wouldn’t dig into the skin and then created the claws of the glove by using several layers of masking tape and shaped them into something that i was happy with.

I really enjoyed making this piece as it is something that could be used in theatre or simply for halloween costumes. All in all I would say that it was a successful creation but if I had to create it again i would wrap the wire frame with plastic and use a heat gun to mould it to the shape of the wire skeleton. I would also try to use more neutral colours instead of the stark bright blue that I used. I would also try to make the claws a more uniform shape and also try to make them longer to give them a more menacing feeling when being viewed.
